The organizers of The World's 50 Best Restaurants and The World's 50 Best Bars have presented, together with the Basque Culinary Center, the first edition of the 50 Next, a selection of 50 young people under 35 years of age who stand out in their respective fields to develop a creative and innovative role in the world of gastronomy. Provided that health recommendations allow it, it is expected that the awards will be presented at a face-to-face gala in Bilbao in 2022.

Rather than being a simple ranking, the 50 Next list is divided into seven industry leadership categories: production ('Gamechanging Producers'), technology ('Tech Disruptors'), education ('Empowering Educators'), creative industries ( 'Entrepreneurial Creatives'), science ('Science Innovators'), hospitality ('Hospitality Pioneers') and activism ('Trailblazing Activists'). Each category covers a wide range of different types of jobs, with the aim of illustrating the great diversity of people who work in the sector.

In this year's edition, 5 young Spaniards have been placed: Clara Diez from Madrid, who is in charge of Formaje, the new project that has turned the Plaza de Chamberí into a meeting point for lovers of artisan cheese. The Basque brothers Mikel and Ion Zapiain, for representing the last generation of cider makers, creating the Bizi Goxo ice cider. Maitane Alonso, also Basque and only 20 years old, for devising a machinery for food preservation. And finally, Marc Coloma from Barcelona, activist and co-founder of Heura.
