Björn Frantzén, the best chef in the world 2019

On the 24th of September, The Best Chef Awards 2019 ceremony, a celebration organised by TBC MediaCorp the purpose of which is to award various gastronomy prizes, took place at the University of Barcelona.

This third edition was attended by over a hundred top chefs, but only one of them could be chosen as the world's best chef 2019.

This year, renowned chef Björn Frantzén, owner of the restaurant Frantzén, with three Michelin stars, was awarded the Best Chef Award Top 100 prize. The ex-footballer has experienced a huge rise with respect to the previous editions, bearing in mind that in the 2017 edition he was in 44th place and last year he was fourth.

For his part, Joan Roca, chef of the restaurant El Celler de Can Roca and winner of the previous editions, took second place, whilst Dabiz Muñoz, chef of the restaurant DiverXo in Madrid (with three Michelin stars), kept his third place from last year. In fourth position is chef Grant Achatz, owner of the restaurant Alinea, with three Michelin stars, and in fifth place the three chefs of the Barcelona restaurant Disfrutar,  Oriol Castro, Mateu Casañas and Eduard Xatruch.

In total, three of the world's five best chefs have their restaurants in Spain, two of them in Catalonia. You can see how the Top 100 of the Best Chef Awards 2019 looks by following this link.

There was one change in this third edition with the removal of the Lady Award and the addition in its place of two new categories: the Legend Award and the New Entry Award.

The first of these, the Legend Award, went to renowned Austrian chef, Eckart Witzigmann in recognition of his work behind the stoves and the publication of various books on haute cuisine. With regards to the New Entry Award, this went to the chefs of the restaurant Disfrutar, mentioned above. The same restaurant also took the Best Gourmet City Chef award, which recognises the best restaurant in the city of Barcelona.

At the same time, Jordi Roca was awarded the Best Pastry Chef Award 2019 prize which was given out by Pordamsa, which collaborated with the event.
